Can you disappear in surveillance Britain? →
givemesomethingtoread: David Bond wanted to see if it’s possible to vanish so one day he packed his bag, got into his car and kissed his wife goodbye I’m inspired by this guy, and I’m freaked out by the system he tries to buck.  Seems unreal, doesn’t it?  It’s like we all read those dystopian novels about surveillance and a de-humanized “safe” society, and...

austinkleon: Seth outlines 5 reasons why higher education is about to crash and burn: Most colleges are organized to give an average education to average students. Pick up any college brochure or catalog. Delete the brand names and the map. Can you tell which school it is? College has gotten expensive far faster than wages have gone up. The definition of ‘best’ is under siege. The more...

Hong Kong cage home rents soar  →
abbyjean: Hong Kong’s so called “cage men” may be among the city’s poorest, but rents per square foot for their dingy wire-mesh cubicles are now on a par with luxury flats in the city’s famed Peak district. With Hong Kong property prices soaring and urban redevelopment shrinking the supply of older, cheaper tenement blocks, thousands of cage men living in 15-square-foot cubicles, usually crammed...

It just sorta dawned on me
Today and tomorrow are the last days for me to ride the bus around London with my super-cheap bus pass.  In the years before this one, I was always heading back to my hometown once school was done, so that wasn’t a big deal to me at all.  But now I’m going to be here, in London, all summer, and without a bus pass. I mean, I have my bike and we’re living fairly close to the...

left handed left eared
morninggloria: I just picked up my phone with my right hand and held it up to my right ear.  This is not what I usually do, and it felt really weird, like walking out of the house wearing two different shoes. Normally, I pick up the phone with my teeth and shake it around for a little bit, and then throw it and growl at the receiver. I never feel right using my right hand or ear either.

Arizona Sheriff Says He Won’t Enforce New ‘Racist’... →
iteeth: abbyjean: Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who has been a cop for 52 years, says it will definitely lead to racial profiling. He told local TV station KGUN9 that the law is “racist,” “digusting,” and “unnecessary,” and he won’t enforce it. While the law may not explicitly mandate profiling, Dupnik said that there’s no way to enforce it without doing so; the “lawful contact”...

Arizona Iced Tea Shows Its Papers  →
abbyjean: Apparently fearing that ill-informed Americans might boycott their drinks anyway, Don Vultaggio, the founder and chairman of Arizona Beverages, posted a note on the company’s Web site on Wednesday, headlined, “Arizona’s From New York,” accompanied by an illustration stressing the company’s patriotism. The note, on a section of the drink maker’s site called “Recent Concerns” stresses...

Last week in Los Angeles I participated in a live Q&A as part of an ASCAP expo on songwriting. When the topic of Twitter came up, I explained my waning interest in it being part of my daily life. By no means do I think it’s over as a medium altogether, but I do think that the days of “Twitter: The… Sayin’ it like it is. I figured out a reason I love Tumblr more than I like...

I have done some really really stupid things in my life. Stupid, mean, jerky things. I haven’t realized until the last couple of years or so that I am not actually the smartest person in the world and that I am not actually always right and that the best thing that I can hope for myself is that…

– ‘Gay Dog’ Refused Entry To Australian Restaurant (via phronk) How can this even be real?  I swear, the writers at The Onion are infiltrating the world and putting these stories out there.  That’s the only explanation that doesn’t confuse the hell out of me.
